Popsy featuring Premi “Ajo Sare Nachiye”
Wow! It’s good to see these guys in a video after quite some time. (Haha, as a Johal Premi fan, Mother Bhangraw will be happy to see this.)
Popsy’s “Hyper” is out now.
Old School Sunday – Amit and Sanj “Tina O Tina”
I definitely have to post up more songs by Amit and Sanj of Executives.
During the eighties and nineties, these guys had one of the best series (10 in all) of remix tapes available on the UK Bhangra market.
To kick off how good they were, here is their take on Premi’s “Tina o Tina” from Extra Hot Volume 5.
Notice the Snap! “The Power” sample? Kind of hard not to, but these guys were the first to do it. They also did a few Hindi remixes as well as an Argentina football song remix (I’ll excuse them for that.)
Purchase “Unity (Asi Haan Punjabi)”
Last week I posted about the charity project all of the old school UK Bhangra artists were getting together to do.
Well here is the link to purchase from iTunes.
Purchase “Asi Haan Punjabi” Here.
Old School Sunday – Unity “Asi Haan Punjabi” (Behind the Scenes)
This week’s Old School Sunday video is from two weeks ago. Yep, two weeks ago.
Every year, the BBC in the UK, host a charity event “Children in Need.” They do the whole Telethon bit, and this year, it’ll have an old school UK Bhangra flavour.
“Unity,” a whole bunch of old school artists, have got together and produced a song for the benefit, and as you can see below, a video is in the works.
Going by the number of artists associated with the song, I figured today would be as good as time as any for this video. Check out my favourite band growing up – Apna Sangeet – steal the spotlight.
I heard the song on BBC Radio this past week, and it’s not exactly a dance floor filler, but it is a great track, and I can tell you that Shin (DCS) ripped it.
The “Unity” performance on Television takes place on November 20, 2009. As I get more details, I’ll keep you all updated.
Old School Sunday – Premi & Death Jamm Volume 1
This weeks Old School Sunday feature is a double shot, and it’s from my personal collection.
Premi’s “Disco Nu Chal Chaliye” was on the Premi No. 1 album released in 1988.
In the 1980′s, Premi was like Anti Bhangra. Sure they performed Bhangra, but the way they handled themselves was like a “we don’t care/we do what we want to” Rock Star attitude.
When you think about Premi, the first song that probably pops into your head is “Tina Oh Tina” or “Nachdi Di Gooth Kulgaye.” But growing up, I absolutely loved this track. I don’t know what it was that did it, because the only thing that I understood was “Sit in my Capri” (Ford car) and “Let’s go to the Disco.” I had no idea it was about picking up your girlfriend, skipping a day of school and heading to a daytimer.
Death Jamm Volume 1 “Boliyan (Gangsta Hip Hop Mix)”
I rinsed this song. When I discovered it in Grade 9, wherever my Walkman was, the Death Jamm tape was in it.
Released in 1993, Balwinder Safri provided the vocals. It was in this song that he sang “Chotan Ishq Diyan,” a personal favourite. I got mad love for this song, and to this day this song somehow still sounds fresh.
There were six more releases in the Death Jamm series produced by various people. But in my mind, none were able to top the premiere one.
