Old School Sunday – Amarjit Sidhu “Ser Par Topi”

Kamlee 2 Cover

This album came fresh on the heels of “Jam 2 the Bhangra” when Amarjit Sidhu’s sound was just killing it.

Just like “Jam..” this album contained some monster hits (Baskar, Chan Meh Tera Na Bhul Gai, Giddhian Dhe Rani) as well as my personal fave off this album “Ser Par Topi.”

The song was sung by Amarjit Sidhu, with the accompaniment of Sardara S. Gill, Davinder Kalsi, Arjinder Kang, Nicky Patel and Kulwant Bhamra.

Okay, it’s not exactly Bhangra, as Amarjit Sidhu says, it is a remake of a classic Hindi track from the 1960′s. But this is my blog kids, so deal with it (and sing along.)

There’s a lot of talk about music production these days, and Producers not knowing the meaning of the song before they go and create a sound for a track. So I found it rather interesting reading this in the cover of the cassette:

Dear Music Fan,

Thank you for buying the album KAMLEE 2. I have produced this album for all music lovers, throughout the world. I felt that there is need to experiment and expand the current Bhangra Musical Scene. Music knows no boundaries, either culturally or ethnically, and this Album will, I am sure, reflect this theme.

Although I live and work in the U.K., I have retained my cultural roots and the influences of Asia and it’s rich musical heritage. Within KAMLEE 2 there are traditional tracks that have been produced musically showing respect to traditional ways. There are other tracks, and there have a different musical approach.

In all cases I have looked at the Melody and the Lyrics, and then produced the music to suit.

This Album has been produced essentially for your entertainment. I hope that I have succeeded in bringing pleasure to you, and your fellow music lovers throughout the world.

Yours Sincerely,

Amarjit Sidhu

In a time where artists say they create music for themselves, this is refreshing to see that Amarjit Sidhu was making music for us, the general public. I also find it interesting that even back in 1993, the Bhangra scene was looking for something different and refreshing.

Amarjit Sidhu come back and make some hits!

Amarjit Sidhu

Old School Sunday – Apna Sangeet “Akhien Udeek Dhean”

I just love this album, so here is another track from Apna Sangeet’s 1992 album, Jam To the Bhangra.

This time, the group covers “Akhien Udeek Dhean.” You may be familiar with the track by the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan version, but Apna Sangeet stylized it with a Michael Jackson “Jam” sample.

Old School Sunday – Sardara S. Gill “Sajna Veh Sajna”

Jam to the Bhangra Cover

This weeks Old School Sunday, is an ode to Gurdas Maan through the voice of Sardara S. Gill.

Whoever sings this song, it is one of my favourites (of course when Gurdas sings it, it is even more special.) Whenever I hear it, I feel like the song takes my imagination away to the Pind, and isn’t that what good music is about?

The album, “Jam To the Bhangra” was released in 1992, with production handled by the signature sound of Amarjit Sidhu. What’s interesting about the album, was the lack of K.S. Bhamra, but Sardara employed the rest of the band.

The album contained six tracks, of which at least five of the songs are classics. Check the heat;

Track 1 – Kamlee Yaar Dhe Kamlee
Track 2 – Manke Te Manka
Track 3 – Soho Road (Returns)
Track 4 – Akhien Udeek Dhean
Track 5 – Apna Sangeet Sings Apna Sangeet
Track 6 – Sajna Veh Sajna

WOW!
