Battle of the iPhone Tumbi Applications

I don’t know how it happened, but two iPhone Tumbi Apps released virtually at the same time from two separate artists in the Bhangra industry.

First there was the Tumbi Nut, created and sold by The Sound Pipe Records.

You may have seen it in action in the Nach Bhabiye video.

Soon after the release of Tumbi Nut, came the release of iTumbi, created by and associated with Panjabi MC.

I don’t have an iPhone, so I can’t give you first hand knowledge as to what I would think is the best App, although I tried the “Dhol Nut” App and I couldn’t get the hang of it.

But scope the following, and I think you will be sold on one App versus the other.

Well as they say, “The champ is here.”

I’m sold. Even though it’s free.

(%&$# me! PMC is too sick)

Deeps Pabla “Aja Mahi” Music Video Contest

Deeps Pabla is set to release his latest single, “Aja Mahi” this Summer, and for the upcoming video he is running a contest.

He wants you to provide the ultimate love story, and then he will turn the winning entry into the music video.

As Deep Pabla put it, “This hasn’t been done before in the Indian music industry, by giving the consumers a chance to be part of the creative process in music.”

I agree. It’s a great idea in which someone’s creative vision, or actual love story will be immortalised.

Hit up deepspabla.com for more info.

Contest ends May 1, 2010.

Old School Sunday – Where Ajay and Shivani Meet

This week’s Old School Sunday is something different.

I have been a part of a few wedding skits, but this one trumps them all. This is one of the best spoof videos I have seen, and it’s also the bride and groom’s wedding reception entrance video.

DJ Stin emailed this clip to me, and since the song “I Love You” is from Heera’s 1986 album “Diamonds from Heera,” it’s only fitting that I post it today.

For the record, Heera were in attendance at the reception as well, and enjoyed the video too.

The Return of Apna Sangeet

Apna Sangeet

That’s right people! Sardara S. Gill and K.S. Bhamrah had a sit down last month, and agreed to put their differences aside in order to get back together and form Apna Sangeet.

They will be performing at a gig in Birmingham at the end of the month alongside Malkit Singh, and promise to perform with a full live band, as well as premiere two new tracks on their upcoming album set to be released next year.

My question is, will Gurcharan Mall be in the fold on stage doing his crazy Dholi antics?

Will the group try and go for the nineties sound that kind of saw their demise, or stick to their original sound?

Will people still appreciate the Apna Sangeet sound that we adored in the eighties?

Will UK Producers like Sukshinder Shinda, PBN jump on behind the decks to produce for them?

I saw Apna Sangeet perform live at more wedding receptions than any other group back in the 1980’s, and they were by far my favourite band, so you can say I am more than a little bit excited. But as excited as I am in anticipating this comeback, I will have to somewhat withhold it until I hear some more news, and get answers to the above questions.

Keep it locked.

Panjabi MC in Perth, Australia

Panjabi MC was recently DJing at a gig in Perth, Australia, and he posted up a couple of videos of himself in action.

Back in the day, I used to hear people saying that PMC would mix his songs before gigs, and then just press play. Clearly, today that is not the case.

PMC mixing “Main Hogaya Sharabbi” with “Crack a Bottle”

PMC mixing “Jogi” with “Hip Hop is Dead”

“Jogi” has been one of my favourite PMC joints since he first released it on “100% Proof” back in 1995. To this day, whenever I have it on, and my mum is around, she’ll still reminisce by saying “this song was performed live by Mohammad Sadiq and Ranjit Kaur at your Mamma Ji’s wedding in India in 1976.”

The Twitter Network

Twitter

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking site that asks one simple question. What are you doing? It’s micro blogging at it’s best, and anyone can do it.

Wanna tell your “followers” you just saw something awesome? Send a tweet. Wanna stay up to date with what your friends, Shaquille O’Neal, Brooke Burke, Shah Rukh Khan, Swami, Bhangraw are up to? Read our tweets.

I have never been into the whole facebook thing, but I can wrap my head around twitter, as it doesn’t consume a lot of time, and you actually have a chance at meeting/chatting/gaining insight into some cool peeps on the internets.

Follow the link in the picture, or start off by “following me” with the link in the sidebar.

You know you want to.

Swami Looking for a Supporting Act

Swami are looking to provide an opportunity of a lifetime to one lucky (and talented) band, to open for them at an upcoming North American show.

Now hold your horses fam, there are certain conditions that apply (like being UK based.) I suggest you hit up this page for more info.

I asked S-Endz the groups thinking behind the idea. He said that the move can “give a legitimate opportunity to a new band
who play live because there apparently aren’t very many and this is something that needs to be encouraged.”

This certainly is a great opportunity for a group, to score themselves an instant shot at stardom on a grand scale.

Also, I caught the tail end of a televised interview of Swami in Canada, and the Toronto show this Summer will be June 20. Now that means two countdowns are in order.

Taj-E in the Studio

Here’s an interesting video displaying Taj-E’s skills in the studio.

For you aspiring Producers, this is a little glimpse into what you need to go through if you want to make a song.

But this video shows more than just that. It shows the separation between Producer and Musician. Taj-E is playing the instruments himself. Some Producers would go on and sample other people playing them. Is there a difference in the end product? Probably not. But should talent like this go unnoticed? Definitely not.

After watching the video, I also need to ask, where have these skills been in previous Taj-E albums? I really hope we get to see this talent used to it’s full potential when Sik ‘n’ Twisted releases.
