Old School Sunday – “Taj Mahal’s Megamix” & “Dhol Crawlers”
This weeks Old School Sunday keeps it homegrown.
Representing Gerrard India Bazaar in the city of Toronto, DJ Taj Mahal (who owns Taj Mahal Audio Centre) put together this album in 1993.
The first track, an eight minute megamix, contains songs from a variety of UK bands and singers, blended with some of the best Hip Hop beats of that time.
Taj Mahal’s Megamix
I have to be honest, mostly because my sister is sitting right here (and it was indeed her cassette purchase.) I had a hard time digging music like this because of what I thought was a lack of creativity on the part of DJ’s back then in North America, who would release popular Bhangra tracks smashed with a popular Hip Hop beat. Maybe I’ve matured (unlikely) or there just isn’t anything good out there right now (more likely) that I can appreciate this track even more now.
All in all there were five tracks on the cassette, and since I’m digging the music on this next track as well, because it’s got two banging samples, let’s make this a double dose.
Dhol Crawlers (Housing)

Man, I remember my cousins buying this joint and thinking they were alllllllll that, this is pretty bush league considering what Sagoo did with the Wham Bam megamix, soooooooooooooooooooooft, I never liked it and hearing it again makes me cry.
The first comment was just for the megamix , you cant go wrong with the Sagloops and Nightcrawlers , boooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmbbbbbbbb
You’re right about Bally’s mix being leaps and bounds better. To this day when the Malkit beat drops I still shout “funky” in between the drop thinking this is on Wham Bam
I have never heard theses mixes but that may be because I had moved away from the GTA two years prior to that and was cut off from the wonderful world of bhangra for a good period of time (I’m not goin to say how many years, it was long enough) But The first mix is pretty decent, considering its coming from T.O., wham bham obivously is HUGGGEEEE, but this mix makes an attempt at that. The dholcrawlers is interesting…. to say the least… My two bits as usual
OMG I remember this classic tapes during the good old high school days!!! Anyone know where I can find a copy???
