Notorious Jatt “Khanda” Video

Khanda Artwork

Where to begin?

I received the promo for this song two weeks ago, but I didn’t want to put it up until I had formulated an opinion. I thought if the video was released soon enough, it would clear up some questions.

After watching the video, I can see they tried their best to justify the lyrics of the song.

The track is typical Notorious Jatt hype music, but the lyrics still irk me. In no way am I a conservative shrew, but I just cannot get past the chorus.

“Asal Peshaan Panjabi Dhee Gal Paiya Khanda”

“You can recognise a true Panjabi as they have a Khanda around their neck”

Huh?

The line has caused quite a stir, as they’re bringing religion into what will inevitable be perceived as a club anthem.

Now I know there is a lot of people out there that do rock a Khanda on their chain, or in their rear view mirror, or are tatted up with one.

But look at this:

Not all Panjabis are Sikhs AND Not all Sikhs are Panjabis

See what I did right there? But that is my Western thought.

Talking to someone from the East, and they simply tell you, it doesn’t matter what you’re background is, there are all types of people living in Panjab that wear a Khanda around their neck, so I shouldn’t take the chorus so literally.

I can’t do it.

I think the wording is wrong, even within the context they are attempting to display in the video. They could have done some things in the video to clarify their position more, but instead they fudged it.

I haven’t heard Notorious Jatt or Nirmal Sidhu offer any justification to the lyrics yet, but stay tuned. This may get ugly.

The album “Still Livin’ It Up,” is set to contain a lineup of;

Kulvinder Johal, Preet Mahadipuria, Ranjit Mani, Pargat Khan, Kaka Bhaniawala and more.

The first single “Khanda” is set to release on iTunes on May 22.

After listening to the music of the track, I get the feeling like I’ve heard this beat before, and I think I have. Notorious has been producing for a couple of other singers (like Juz’D,) and I think the beats were similar on that album.

The label tried to make it a point to say that this is Notorious’ first solo album since three years ago. I guess they don’t want us to get confused, although it’s hard when everything sounds the same.

thanks, you are the first bhangra site owner who went with his gut feeling and listed it as wrong

    do not be fooled.

for this is the true face of Folkhop. The same folkhop that killed bhangra music in 1994.

Look at that video…what is the real message being given.

When you are young, you should shave your head and use a tattooe and a blingi khanda chain to represent your sikh faith, not full kesh and darhi. No no, people under 50 never wear full kesh and darhi, only the elderly wear those.

    Punkra forever

folkhop poser djs and their accomplice pendu vocalists from india can never make bhangra music.

The talentless djs killed bhangra music in 1994, now they are trying to kill sikhi as well. Beware of the folkhoppers.

I would have responded earlier, but I had to take down the Khanda hanging from my rearview.

Jay, you are such a conservative schrew. Get with the times bud. This is the face of the new Sikhi, whether you like it or not. (j/k)

It’s sad what “artists” will do to make a buck.

I have been a fan of bhangra since the early days when we had musicians, real live percussions (instead of sampled loops), vocals that were not screams, lyrics that made sense (dont remember alot of daaru and jatt songs)

Their is something really unhealthy about this. How can someone call this Bhangra?

I dont remember channi of alaap ever wearing a khanda around his neck.

The khanda is a sacred religious symbol. What is so hard to understand about that?

These people should not be in the music business. I feel sorry for their maapey.

btw..thanks for the mahender kapoor (RIP) review. I still play that tape.
